MTA subway series

In the late 1980s, Jenny 8 del Corte Hirschfeld
rode the New York City subway daily with
a disposable camera, quietly capturing candid
portraits of fellow passengers. At a time
when photographing people underground was
still considered risky—and long before
smartphones made constant documentation
commonplace—she worked discreetly
observing moments of reflection, fatigue, and
solitude within the shared space of the train.
These images capture a distinctly urban
solitude—silent portraits of a bygone era before
smartphones, when public isolation had a
different texture and rhythm.
Later, she transformed these photographs into
paintings on orange-tinted canvases, evoking
the muted tones and transient atmosphere
of the subway itself. The series rejects the artifice
of studio portraiture, embracing anonymity
and honesty—an unvarnished portrait of humanity
in motion. Subway Series reflects on the
rhythms of city life, the quiet connections and
separations that define the daily commute, and the
timeless intimacy of shared public space.
