To what extent is the playground a pedagogically regulated space, subject to norms—a political-ideological mirror image and projection of society and the city?

Jenny 8 del Corte Hirschfeld always perceived playgrounds as particularly dismal non-places, precisely because they are part of our cultural heritage. In New York she collected playgrounds photographically in order to examine non-, utilitarian, and play-spaces and their contextual embedding.

What emerged is a typology that makes the essential and comparable visible. The works are executed in pastel chalk and beeswax.

23. Ausstellung, vom 21. Juni bis 29. August 2024:

 Jenny 8 del Corte Hirschfeld

Im Zuge der Industrialisierung entstanden erste städtische Kinderspielplätze. Seit etwa 1870 gibt es diese in New York, zunächst mit karger Ausstattung, bis ab den 1930er Jahren unter Park Comissioners in Zusammenarbeit mit Architekten und auch Künstlern mehr Spielplätze entstanden. Sicherheitsstandards führten und führen immer wieder dazu, dass das Prinzip der Ästhetik und des Spielens missachtet wird.

Jenny 8 del Corte Hirschfeld eine Fülle von Spielplätzen in New York fotografiert. Weil sie diese immer als besonders betrübliche Unorte empfand, wollte sie diese Un-, Gebrauchs- und Spielorte und deren Integration ins Umfeld untersuchen. Die Fotografien der Plätze, im Winter ohne Blätter an den Bäumen und bewusst ohne Menschen angefertigt, zeigen allesamt Pastelltöne, als hätte man sich beim Thema Spielplatz auf muted colours geeinigt.

Ende 2023 hat Jenny 8 del Corte Hirschfeld die Spielplätze dann gezeichnet: mit Pastellkreide und Bienenwachs, aus dem sie farbliche Elemente ausgekratzt hat. Es ist eine ästhetische und auch farbliche Spurensuche, die sie mit den Spielplätzen unternimmt – entstanden ist eine in Molltönen gehaltene Typologie.

Dies arbeitet Jenny in unterschiedlichen Bildformaten, die sie auf der Litfaßsäule arrangiert, überzeugend heraus: Ihr genauer Blick auf horizontale und vertikale Elemente und das Sezieren allgemeiner Melancholie ist auch eine Schule des Sehens. Sind Spielplätze als Bildungsorte beliebig austauschbar und könnten überall sein, oder sind sie doch einzigartige reizvolle (Un-)Orte?

Zur Einführung während der Vernissage sprach Florian Koch. Der elektro Indiemusiker HA UB gab ein Live-Konzert.
